  • Prepare for Cooking next week!

The Grade 7′s have been discussing locally created recipes for the past two periods, and are now in the process of preparing to cook everything in the next Green Studies period. We actually will have  a bit longer than usual, since we are taking a little time from Science to be in the kitchen. Students [...]

  • On to a New Subject….

The Grade 7′s wrapped up their coconut oil unit this week, and decided the future of the class together. They were given two options: cooking locally and organically, or making beauty products. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure that a class with the majority boys would go for the cooking, although there [...]

  • Creating Cold Processed Virgin Coconut Oil

After a couple classes of discussion about oils and sweeteners (including a survey which had over 150 responses!) we finally started to apply our knowledge of oils. In this week, we processed coconuts from what falls off the tree into virgin coconut oil. Ask the students for the process…. pictures to come soon!

  • On the road to making coconut oil

In Grade 7 we are learning about oils and sweeteners in Green Studies. In the next class, we will be making coconut oil using a cold processing method (which involves fermentation of the coconut flesh). Before that though, the students need to follow through on their promise to get people to complete their survey. Please [...]

  • Tour De Campus in search of Staples

In today’s class we focused on what staples foods are found in Indonesia. The students learned about Sago and Taro and Cassava, along with of course rice. We then headed out to check out the various staples on our campus. We found many, but what really made the day was to see the volume of [...]

  • Alternative Staples Explored

The students started the week by learning about 4 alternative staples: chia, quinoa, sorghum, and amaranth. We used the class time to go through a quiz identifying which staple had which properties. By the end of class, the students had a clear idea of where these 4 staples came from, what they were good for, [...]

  • Starting with Staples, then covering Green Manual

Hi Parents and kids, I will be away for this week, but have prepared some good lessons to keep your green minds cranking out the interesting ideas. On Tuesday, Ibu Meegan will help you learn about some of the staple crops, why they are beneficial and used by people, and then we will do some [...]

  • Grade 7 Presentations on Health Drinks

I was really REALLY impressed with the respect that the Grade 7′s showed one another during the presentations. It brought a tear to my eye… or was that the errant dust coming from the construction site next door? Despite the rapid firing of nail guns, most of the students presented well. The next class is [...]

  • Guerilla Gardening

Today we took a detour and connected up with Global Awareness, and got some Guerilla gardening happening. Some were majorly stealthy, sneaking between the bushes like agile creatures of the jungle. Others were more like members of a zombie horde, slowly dragging their way through the paths of GS. In any case, we transplanted some [...]

  • Impressive (and sometimes palatable) drinks

In class, we created the health drinks the students have long been thinking about, some with surprisingly tasty results. Others were of striking colors which would bring their efficacy into question by even the most devout health food affecianado. In any case, the students were able to test their recipes and some will surely be [...]
