IGCSE’s

How do they work?

The syllabus is set by Cambridge but how the subject is taught is determined by the school. Each subject has a mix of assessment methods including coursework, practical exercises, oral and listening tests, projects and written examinations. Coursework is set and marked by the school and externally moderated by Cambridge International Examinations. Students are benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades with clear guidelines for the standard of achievement for different grades. The exams are held in June and November each year, with the results being available the following August and February respectively. Cambridge IGCSE’s cater for differing levels of ability. In many subjects there are two levels – core and extended. The core level is suitable for students who expect to achieve a Grade C through to Grade G. The extended level is suitable for students who expect to achieve a Grade A* through to Grade C and contains more challenging assessment tasks. The Cambridge program develops knowledge and skills in:

  • subject content
  • applying knowledge and understanding to familiar and new situations
  • intellectual enquiry
  • flexibility and responsiveness to change
  • working and communicating in English
  • influencing outcomes
  • cultural awareness
