IGCSE’s: Grade Equivalents

Grade equivalentsHow do IGCSE’s relate to grades in my country?

IGCSE’s are widely recognised throughout the world. If you return to your home country and your child is continuing their education at a secondary school there you may be concerned about how the IGCSE’s compare to local educational standards. In particular the grades used to describe the various levels of achievement may be very different.

It may be helpful for parents who have come from the USA to compare IGSCE grades with USA grades and grade point averages (GPA). Because the grading systems in the USA and the UK are different it is necessary to first convert the IGCSE grade into a US equivalent grade, and then calculating the grade point average.

Five passes at grade C or higher would indicate a student’s readiness to begin freshman level courses in American universities.

A number of different GPA scales are used across the USA but the most common one is the 4.0 scale where a grade A is worth 4.0 and an F grade is worth 0.

To calculate the GPA using the 4.0 scale, you first convert the US grade awarded to the numerical value.

The next step requires some calculation. When determining a GPA you need to know the value of the credits for each subject taken. IGCSE’s always have a credit value of 1. If a student was taking 6 subjects and received the following results their GPA would be calculated as follows:
